The anime "Urusei Yatsura" has wrapped up its 46-episode run, with the final episode airing late on June 20 (early June 21). To thank the viewers, a "THANK YOU!" artwork has been released, along with comments from Hiroshi Kamiya, who voices Ataru Moroboshi, and Sumire Uesaka, who voices Lum.
"Urusei Yatsura" is based on the groundbreaking debut series by Rumiko Takahashi, a manga artist still active today. The story follows Earth’s "most troublesome" high school student, Ataru Moroboshi, and the beautiful alien girl Lum who descends from space. This bold and all-out romantic comedy, though sometimes tinged with sadness, is brought to life by a cast of characters from across the galaxy.
This anime, created to celebrate Shogakukan's 100th anniversary, has adapted carefully selected original episodes into a brand-new series spanning four cours. The first season aired from October 2022 to March 2023, and the second season started in January 2024.
The newly released "THANK YOU!" artwork features Lum sitting cross-legged, surrounded by Ataru, Shinobu, Mendou, Cherry, Sakura, Ran, Rei, Oyuki, Benten, Ten, Ryunosuke, Ryunosuke’s father, and Kotatsu Neko, all displaying their unique expressions and gestures.
Messages from Main Cast:
Hiroshi Kamiya
(Voice of Ataru Moroboshi)
“When I looked it up, the audition was in January 2021. The role was decided and recording started at the end of that year… At that time, I thought the journey to the final episode was long, but now the final episode has aired…! It went by so quickly. I think it means that I had a very fulfilling time! I was so happy to be part of my beloved ‘Urusei Yatsura’! I am grateful to everyone involved in the production! And Ataru, thank you so much! Ah, it was so much fun!!”
Sumire Uesaka
(Voice of Lum)
“Being able to play Lum-chan… I am truly, truly happy! It makes me very happy! While it’s sad to reach the final episode, I am honored to have been able to portray my beloved Lum-chan up to ‘Boy Meets Girl’ once again. Ever since I discovered ‘Urusei Yatsura’ through its reruns, I became obsessed, collecting the original comics and merchandise, and had many favorite characters during my student days. My love for Lum-chan, who is cute, devoted, jealous, a bit mysterious, and the strongest, has never changed. I never imagined the day would come when I could stand by her as part of the cast. Since passing the audition and starting recording, I have been living in a dream-like, fun, and happy time. While the anime broadcast reaches its conclusion here, I sincerely hope for another opportunity to voice Lum-chan again…! For that day, I will make sure to stay in top condition! To all the fans who have always loved ‘Urusei Yatsura’ and those who discovered it through this anime, thank you so much. I believe ‘Urusei Yatsura’ is a work that will be read and loved for generations, for decades and centuries to come. I want to continue loving the world of ‘Urusei Yatsura’ together with all of you for a long, long time to come! Thank you for your continued support!”
