Tokyo's Grand Cinema Sunshine Ikebukuro is celebrating its 5th anniversary on July 19 with a special screening event titled "5! 5! 5! 5! Go!!!!!". As part of this celebration, they have announced the second wave of special screenings, including a "Poster Selection Special" featuring Studio Ghibli’s "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away", as well as a focus on sound director Miwa Iwanami’s works and a Chinese film festival.
The "Poster Selection" is a project where select classic films from the theater's poster collection are screened. This time, the "Poster Selection Special" will feature Studio Ghibli’s beloved films "Princess Mononoke" and "Spirited Away". Currently, the theater is also showing Studio Ghibli’s latest release, "How Do You Live?", which premiered on July 14, 2023. During the "Poster Selection Special", you can enjoy three Ghibli films at the same venue. Additionally, "Spirited Away" will be part of the "Parent-Child Cinema" program, allowing kids to enjoy the movie in a friendly environment.
Moreover, the "BESTIA×Iwanami Sound EXPO" will showcase works from the acclaimed sound director Miwa Iwanami, known for his contributions to both animation and live-action films. From July 5 to July 11, nine of his works will be screened, including "BLAME!", "HELLO WORLD", "SAND LAND", "Sing a Bit of Harmony", "Girls und Panzer der Film", "Girls und Panzer: The Finale" episodes 1-4, and "PSYCHO-PASS The Movie". On July 6 and 7, there will be special talk shows featuring Iwanami and guest speakers for all the screened films.
In addition to these events, the theater will host a special Chinese film festival in collaboration with "Interesting Films", a distributor dedicated to bringing Chinese cinema to Japan. This event, titled "Den'ei Sai", will feature notable Chinese animations such as "The Legend of Hei", which has made a significant impact on the global animation market and gained popularity in Japan.
