The final London performance of Spirited Away: A Stage Adaptation starring Mone Kamishiraishi will be live-streamed on Hulu on August 25th. On the same day, the recorded performance of the Imperial Theatre production starring Kanna Hashimoto will also be streamed. Additionally, starting August 17th, an exclusive all-at-once streaming of the three-episode documentary Spirited Away: The Stage Journey to London will begin.
Spirited Away: A Stage Adaptation was first staged in 2022 by the Royal Shakespeare Company of the UK, under the direction and adaptation by John Caird, known for his work on Les Misérables and other theatrical masterpieces. The main role of Chihiro was performed by Kanna Hashimoto and Mone Kamishiraishi in a double cast, receiving high praise. After reruns at the Misono-za in Nagoya in 2023, the production added new actors Rina Kawaei and Momoko Fukuchi as Chihiro for its 2024 performances. Starting with the Imperial Theatre in March, it embarked on its first overseas performance in London while concurrently touring Japan, touching stages in Nagoya, Fukuoka, Osaka, and concluding in Sapporo in June.
This time, Hulu exclusively live streams the grand finale of this overseas performance on August 25th at 3:30 AM Japan time, featuring Mone Kamishiraishi as Chihiro at the London Coliseum, one of the West End's largest theaters with approximately 2,300 seats. This marks a historic scale for a Japanese language production by a Japanese cast and is the first such endeavor by Toho. The stream will offer the thrill of live theatre and also include catch-up streaming, allowing multiple viewings during the availability period.
In addition, the March 21st, 2024 performance of Spirited Away: The Stage Adaptation at the Imperial Theatre starring Kanna Hashimoto will also be exclusively live-streamed on the same day, August 25th at 3:30 AM Japan time. This is a golden opportunity to enjoy both the Japanese and London performances from the comfort of your home.
Moreover, from August 17th, Spirited Away: The Stage Journey to London, a documentary following the lead-up to the London performances, will start exclusive all-at-once streaming. A digest of this documentary will be broadcast on NTV's & Hulu on the late night of August 17th. The documentary, allowed backstage access, captures the intense dedication of the Japanese cast and the struggles and challenges of the art, sound, and lighting teams from Japan and London, offering a deeper appreciation of the play.
Make sure to check out the streaming of both the Japanese and London performances together with this fascinating documentary.
