The Gundam Manhole Project, orchestrated by the Bandai Namco Group's Gundam Project, has finalized the installation spots for its manhole covers in Minamiuonuma City, Niigata Prefecture. Starting August 7th, 2024, the Roadside Station Minamiuonuma 'Yuki Akari' will feature the "RX-78-2 Gundam and Koshihikari Rice Fields" design, while the "YMS-15 Gyan and Mt. Hakkai" will be placed in front of the return box at Minamiuonuma City Library.
This initiative installs manhole covers designed with characters and mobile suits from the "Mobile Suit Gundam" series at various locations across the country. It's a collaboration with local governments aimed at revitalizing regions while strengthening the bond between Gundam fans of all ages.
Minamiuonuma City is renowned as one of Japan's prime rice-producing areas, often touted as having the best-tasting rice in the country. The deliciousness of the locally produced "Minamiuonuma Koshihikari" rice owes much to the meltwater flowing from the mountains, including the sacred Mt. Hakkai.
The Roadside Station Minamiuonuma, where the "RX-78-2 Gundam and Koshihikari Rice Fields" manhole will be installed, consists of three facilities: the Imaizumi Memorial Hall, the Four Seasons Taste Hall, and the Rest Plaza. It's a tourist spot where visitors can enjoy the local food, art, history, and nature. In autumn, one can view the shimmering rice fields depicted in the design.
The "YMS-15 Gyan and Mt. Hakkai" manhole will be placed at the Minamiuonuma City Library, located inside the La La Shopping Center next to the JR Muikamachi Station East Exit. The library, awarded the "Good Design Award" in 2014, is cherished as a familiar and proud space for cultural exchange. Walking through the nearby arcade, visitors can see Mt. Hakkai, featured in the design.
